Strata Review - The King of Puzzles is here on Windows Phone 8

Strata is a puzzle game from Graveck Interactive famous for their games like Jump Dewds! and Skee-Ball on Apple's iOS. Good to see a highly acclaimed developer making its way to the Windows Phone 8 Platform.

Strata is a unique puzzle game that has a perfect combination of simplicity , elegance and challenge.

Gameplay-
Puzzle consists of squares arranged in a grid which have a unique colour. The goal of the game is to strategically layer coloured ribbons in rows & columns to match the pattern of coloured squares. As simple as the rules are, the challenge lies in matching the top most ribbon with the same coloured square underneath it which becomes cumbersome as the number of grids increase.
Tutorial does an awesome job of setting out the rules of the game within a short span of time

The game starts with 2x2 grid but the number of grids increase as you progress. If you manage to complete the level without reversing your move, u get a 'Perfect' award as shown in the picture above.

Getting a 'Perfect' award requires a lot of forethought & you have to plan your strategy precisely as you don't get a second chance. Although, this can be mastered by playing the same level again
Design-
The design of Strata and its User interface is minimalist and simplistic as the Metro UI (Oops Modern UI) of Windows Phone. There are no distractions in the form of advertisements or any mindless interruptions. The transitions while swiping the ribbons are smooth. The UI consists of 3 icons- Hints, Restart and Back.

Audio-
The most striking feature of this game is the background audio which starts when you swipe the ribbon. The tempo builds up as you swipe a layer of ribbon, which fades away if u stop swiping for too long. If you make a wrong move, there is a bummer tone. These little audio changes have a pleasant effect while playing.

Number of levels-
The game is divided into 6 sets - Entwine, Flourish, Persist, Sundry, Prodigy and Harvest. There are a massive 396 levels in total which will take hours to complete. There is no in-app purchasing, all the levels are available when you buy the Full game.

Performance-
The game was reviewed on Lumia 920 which has 1GB RAM. There was no lag or crashes whatsoever. Although, there is a minor bug which occurs when you press back button rapidly when you are at Set 5 or 6.

Wrap Up-
The puzzle game which gets its basics right. Simplistic design & impressive audio coupled with massive number of levels, this game is a must buy in case you love puzzles. The game cost Rs.160 ($3). But not to worry, you can try the game before purchasing. Click the link here.

Nokia Refocus app released for select Lumia devices

Nokia released the Nokia Refocus app which is a Lytro-style app for its Pureview devices. You capture an image using Refocus app and it takes the shot. The amazing bit is that you can tap anywhere on the captured image to focus on that area. Basically you don't have to worry about focusing the image before the shot is taken you can tap to focus later and get the amazing shot.

The samples of the app are included below, just tap on various areas of the images to see how it works.

Here is my attempt with the Refocus app on Lumia 920.

This not only simplifies how you take a photo, but also gives us endless editing opportunities.

Check out the video taken during Nokia World 2013.

Sami Niemi, Nokia’s director of Capture & Relive software product management explains,

“Nokia Refocus isn’t just about being able to refocus your photos on your own phone, we want you to share those stunning shots with your friends and let them refocus the shots, too! When you share these photos on Facebook or on the web, they can do precisely that.”

The app is available for the Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 1020 and  yet to be release Lumia 1520 and is available for download here.

Nokia building another Windows RT Device, But this time its 8 inch tablet

When it comes to tablet market, iOS and Android still owns the major share. Windows RT is stil a niche. Other than Microsoft and Nokia, all other OEMs stopped developing for Windows RT. But even Nokia and Microsoft are developing ARM tablets for 10-inch size. We heard some rumors that Microsoft will release a 8-inch Surface sometime in 2014.

Today a reliable source of information @evleaks leaked that Nokia is building an 8-inch tablets under the codename "illusionist"

Nokia is fully committed to the Windows RT platform. Nokia Lumia 2520 is a monster device when compared to Surface 2. Very little is known, but it won't be shocker if the 8-inch tablet uses Qualcomm chip set for its 8-inch device.

No other information is available as of now. But we are sure @evleaks or Nokia themself will release some data on it.

LockMapper app from Nokia Collection (Major News for Indian Consumers: Nokia testing Operator Billing for Lumia Devices)

Are you someone who travels a lot.? Do you like to have different lock screen on your Windows Phone.? Well, LockMapper is an excellent app for you.

LockMapper keeps your lock screen and live tile up-to-date with a map of your current location, at all times. It constantly updates in the background, but is smart enough to only update when you have moved, and at intervals designed to pro-long battery life, and reduce bandwidth usage.

Another bandwidth saver is the ability to have a mini-map that only uses 20% of the data of a full map, and allows you to use the Bing image-of-the-day, or an image of your own as the main wallpaper.

You can customize what type of map to use (road view, aerial view, weather radar), and what zoom level you want.

While the app is free, you'll need to spend INR 20 for satellite and traffic information support.

Now here comes the interesting twist. Many Lumia users in India don't have Credit Cards. This is where Operator Billing comes into play. Nokia supported Operator Billing for Nokia Store apps. With LockMapper, consumer will notice the new style of In App purchase in their Windows Phone too. (See below)

We tried to discuss about the unannounced service on twitter and got some positive response.

But keep in mind, Its just for In-App Purchase alone.

So, You can download the LockMapper app from the Nokia Collection on the Windows Phone 8 Store or use the QR Code.

GDR3 Preview for Developers - Detailed Outline of new features (Unofficial Changelog)

We've had GDR3 preview for a few hours now and users have started to find new stuff throughout the Windows Phone OS.
If you have been up to date with the rumor mill you might know that GDR3 (now called Update 3) brings certain required features to WP devices. The update might not be as substantial as the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 Blue but is certainly welcome. Many users have updated their devices and there seem to be only a tiny few users issuing complaints/problems. Our team has had a very smooth experience and updated their devices very fast.
Let's get down with what's new

Support for higher resolution (1080p HD) displays
Devices with 1920x1080 resolution will be released soon and this update is the key for that
Support for bigger devices ranging from 5 to 6 inches
These devices will be able to support 6 small sized tiles instead of 4. However this will be only for the larger display devices and not in the current range of existing windows phones.
Support for quad core processors.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor will be supported which should make the already snappy OS even better

Rotation Lock Do we need to explain anymore?

Custom Ringtones and Tones for other events like Email, Text
Use custom ringtones for text messages, emails, voicemails, and reminders. You can also assign custom ringtones to contacts for text messages, so you'll know who's texting you without even looking.

Better storage management New storage settings make it easier to free up space on your phone and manage temporary files. A new category view shows what's taking up space at a glance.

Close apps from the Multitasking view X marks the spot

Driving Mode Driving Mode is designed to limit notifications on the lock screen—including texts, calls, and quick status alerts—until you’re safely parked. (image source WPCentral)

Wi-Fi access during setup You can now connect to Wi-Fi during phone set up, so you can start conserving cellular data right out of the box.
Improvements to Bluetooth A bunch of welcome features here

Improved Internet Sharing
Now you can pair your phone and Windows 8.1 PC or tablet over Bluetooth too and you'll be connected. No need to enter a password or dig out your phone and turn on Internet Sharing—it's done for you.

But wait there's even more good stuff :)

Changes to the Windows Phone Keyboard Now the settings allows to to return to keyboard once you've entered an emoticon

Voice note appears in the messaging hub You can now attach a voice note recorded in amr format and send it via messaging. You can see the attachments menu in the image below

Kids corner setup allows you to skip password This option is available during setting up kids corner where in it provides a button to skip password which is useful in certain cases.

The URL bar expands when activated in Internet Explorer

Overall the update has been a welcome addition to Windows Phone and we only hope more useful features are implemented soon.

Announcing Windows Phone 8 GDR3 OS update details — plus a new developer preview program (Technically for "Everyone")

Microsoft today will detail the features coming in its third major update to Windows Phone 8, now called Update 3. Update 3 will be made available for free to existing handsets over the next several months, as you might expect. But the good news is that Microsoft will also allow developers--really, anyone--early access to Update 3 starting tomorrow.

The Windows Phone Team had three main engineering goals in mind when developing Update 3:
  1. Enable incredible new Windows Phone devices.
  2. Enhance the platform with new capabilities for current users and partners.
  3. Improve overall quality.
Here are the features to be unlocked with Update 3

Support for bigger, higher-resolution screens

So the new update paves the way for future Windows Phone devices with 5- and 6-inch touch screens. The larger, 1080p HD displays on these devices will make Windows Phone even more personal—for example by sporting jumbo-sized Start screens with room for six Live Tiles across instead of four.
A bigger Start screen means the ability to pin even more of the people, info, and apps that matter to you. Built-in apps and Hubs like email, Photos, People, and Music and Videos will also be carefully scaled to take full advantage of the additional real estate on 6-inch screens.

More powerful hardware

In addition to larger screens, Update 3 will also bring support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. The added horsepower that this chip delivers should make our already-fluid operating system perform even better.

Driving Mode

A new feature called Driving Mode helps you get from point A to point B with fewer distractions. Working with a connected Bluetooth device, Driving Mode is designed to limit notifications on the lock screen—including texts, calls, and quick status alerts—until you’re safely parked.

A new feature of Windows Phone 8 Update 3 called Driving Mode helps you get from point A to point B with fewer distractions.

You can even configure Driving Mode to send automatic replies to people who call or text when you’re behind the wheel, to let them know you’ll get back to them.

New accessibility features

Another highlight of the new update is Mobile Accessibility for Windows Phone 8, which isn’t a single feature but a suite of apps designed to make Windows Phone easier to see, hear, and use. The apps, which include a screen reader, make it easier for blind and visually impaired users to manage calls and contacts, send texts and emails, browse the web, make Skype and Lync calls, and hear notifications like alarms, calendar events, and low-battery warnings.

Improved Internet Sharing

In Update 3 made it easier to use your phone as a data-savvy hotspot for Windows 8.1 devices. Just pair your phone and Windows 8.1 PC or tablet over Bluetooth, tap your network name, and you'll be connected and ready to go. No need to enter a password or dig out your phone and turn on Internet Sharing—it's done for you.

Besides hundreds of under-the-hood performance tweaks and enhancements, Update 3 also added a bunch of small but handy new features, including several that you’ve been asking for. They include:

  • More useful ringtones: With Update 3, you can use custom ringtones for more things—including instant messages, emails, voicemails, and reminders. You can also assign custom ringtones to contacts for text messages, so you'll know who's texting you without even looking.

  • No more twist and shout: Does your screen keep spinning when you’re trying to read emails in bed? Use the new rotation lock option to keep it fixed in place.

  • Better storage management: New storage settings make it easier to free up space on your phone and manage temporary files. A new category view shows what's taking up space at a glance.

  • Easily close apps: Now you can use the App switcher to quickly close apps when you're finished with them.

  • Wi-Fi access out of the box: You can now connect to Wi-Fi during phone set up, so you can start conserving cellular data right out of the box.

  • Better Bluetooth: The team made a bunch of improvements to improve connection quality for Bluetooth accessories.

  • So when will all this be coming to your phone? As we mentioned earlier, the rollout initially kicks off in the coming weeks and will continue over several months. Specific timing depends on a number of factors including your carrier and phone model.

SOMETHING SPECIAL IF YOU ARE A DEVELOPER

Microsoft is also announcing a developer preview program, whereby they can get early access to these updates, including Update 3. To qualify, you will need to meet these criteria:

    1. You’re a registered Windows Phone Store developer. ( Microsoft's Windows Phone developer program, however, is just $19. Which is quite a bargain.)
    2. You’re a registered Windows Phone App Studio developer. (You can also use an App Studio account—which is free )
    3. Your phone is “developer-unlocked”
Microsoft notes that the version of Update 3 you download this way will only include Microsoft's code, and not the handset maker and carrier firmware, driver and other software updates that will be added to the public release. And when you participate in this program, you can only move forward with regards to updates: There's no going back. Furthermore, it's possible this update will void your wireless carrier warranty.

Glance Background - (Nokia Lab Beta App)

Do you have Amber updated installed on your Lumia 925/920/1020/820/720/620.?

Do you use Glance on your phone and love the clock appearing when the screen is in sleep mode?

Well, then you will love this amazing Glance Background Beta app from Nokia Lab. It customizes the Glance screen on your Lumia with a personalized background image.  Choose from several preloaded images or create your own.

    Key features

    • Select up to four images to rotate as your Glance background
    • Choose from several high-quality preloaded images
    • Create new backgrounds from your own pictures
    • Optimize your images with a simple editor (preset effects, colorize, zoom)
    • Save modified images for later use

    Known limitations and issues:

    • This application requires the Lumia Amber software update.
    • This app will not work with Nokia Lumia 520 or Nokia Lumia 625 since they don't support Glance screen
    • This app is initially only available in English
    • On the Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 720, and Nokia Lumia 620, you may observe flicker especially with images containing large areas of bright colours
    • Settings >> glance needs to be on for backgrounds to appear
    • Glance Background will increase your overall power consumption. This will vary from one device model to another due to the display size, technology and nature of the selected image.
    • This beta release of Glance Background is offered as a standalone app to allow for easier installation (and removal).  Combining these features into Settings is a longer-term possibility and depends on the results of this beta trial among other things.

You can login to Nokia beta site and download the app. Link is here

The Direct link for the app is here   & QR Code is down below.

Please let us know your feedback about the app in the comment section.
